15 Days & Counting

Yes. Fifteen days without electricity and no end in sight. I’ll pause while you ponder the irony of me being without electricity, given that I work for a power company. Please cover your mouth as you stifle the laughter. We are hanging in there, but it’s tough since half of our subdivision has electricity, including the neighbors across the street from us. We’re in the half that doesn’t have it. It’s very frustrating to look out the windows at night and see lights all around us. It was almost better when the whole neighborhood was dark, not that I begrudge anyone for getting their electricity back. I just live vicariously through them, looking longingly at the glow of their big screen TV’s when I drive by their houses.

We’ve tried laughing about it, but as I’m fond of saying when one of Hubby’s jokes has worn thin, “It has ceased to be funny.” I’m also fond of saying, “Sucks to be me.” Both phrases apply to our situation. I understand why we are still in the dark, and I know the folks working on it have a monumental task, so I’ll just have to be patient a little while longer. I’m just having a little pity party for myself this evening and thought I’d invite you.

May I remind you of why we are without power? I’ve grown to hate this stinkin’ pole. It glares at me every night when I come home. Taunting me, jeering at me from the corner. If I thought I wouldn’t get in trouble, I’d light the dadburn thing on fire and do a little dance all around it. The weather is unseasonably warm, so we don’t need much heat, but we are still burning up a gazillion dollars in gasoline every day with the generator. In fact, I’m using up Teen Angel’s college fund to run the washing machine right now. I’m certainly glad the price of gasoline dropped a little before all of this started or she’d be enlisting in the Army to pay for her education in a couple of years.

We’ll get through this, and one day we’ll look back and laugh at some of the memories we’ve created during this disaster. Right now, I’m just trying to figure out how many amps that Margaritaville drink machine will pull on the generator.

There are still so many people without. I have friends in Livingston county that were told it would be 3-4 weeks before they have their power back on. They have 2 generators hooked up. They also have 2 of their parents living w/them. They are both bedridden also. It is a bad situation for them. I hope you get yours back soon, along with everyone else. It goes old very quickly.

Yeah we were fortunate to get our power back in only a week and a half. I know we'll look back and laugh someday, but guess what, I still ain't laughing! About a third of my county is still out and I feel for those folks. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya. Keep calling them and reminding them you're still out. Somehow, I think if this happened in NY or DC, Anderson Cooper and Geraldo would have already air dropped in to call attention to our plight.

Thank you for inviting me to your pity party...it really was a good one! Next time, I'll bring more to drink!!
Got to thinking that what you all need is some "MacGuyver" (or however it is that you spell his name) thinking...you know...a wad of gum, a rubber band, and a paper clip and VOULA!! Electricity!!

Sending you bright and shiney thoughts...oh and I'll throw in some "be nice to those with power" thoughts too!!
hang in there Hula!!
xxoo

I'm so sorry to hear how many, including yourself, are still without power. I can't even begin to imagine being without electronic conveniences this long.

In this part of the world we don't even hear anything about the power outages in your area anymore.

ACK! 15 days? Without Power? I am such a wimp - I'd last a day, maybe two. then I'd be on a plane for Key West and Mojitos while they figured this mess out....

15 days is sooooo long without power. You have every right to have a pity party, I drink to that. Like the old saying goes--- what don't kill us makes us stronger. Just think how strong your becoming! Your a real survivor.

Wow that is a long time! 4 days was bad for us but we did not have a generator it was early to bed every night and cook outside or go out to eat. I hope you all get power back soon. Must be hard for those who have no back up.

Having experienced lengthy power outages in my neck of the woods, though never one quite as long as 10 days, let me just say that when power is restored, you'll be able to hear all of your neighbors let out a celebratory yell. We even had a young adult run up and down our street screamimg "The power is on! The power is on!"
