Stand Up Straight

I volunteered to take some pictures recently for a program the local high school did to provide free dresses, makeup and hair-do's for girls who couldn't afford them for prom. It was a blast. It was a very moving experience because I found very shy girls lacking in self confidence and wanting nothing to do with the camera when they first started getting ready that day. But by the time I met them downtown that evening for their pictures they were beautiful swans, full of confidence and sass and ready to play to the camera. While they obviously felt very good during our photo sessions, they still had no idea how beautiful they truly were. I had a ball cropping and cleaning up the photos and running different PhotoShop actions on them because I wanted them to have keepsakes that showed them how wonderful they looked. I'd love to show you the pictures, but it's a privacy thing, ya' know. Just take it from me, it was very cool, and I walked away feeling very good about the whole thing.

Afterwards, the leader of the program sent me a picture she took of me at the school, and I swear, when I looked at it all I could hear was daddy's voice in my head sayin', "Stand up straight and pull those shoulders back. Good posture is important!"

If he told me that once when I was a teenager he told me 2016 times. And now that I'm older and my left hip hurts sometimes and my poor running form hurts my stamina I have to admit that he was right. Arrrrgh! I hate it when that happens. All I can do is live for the day my daughter says that to me. Anybody know where I can buy a back brace?

What a great experience you gave those girls! I wish we could see the pictures, but I guess it wouldn't be the same if you cropped off their heads or blipped out their faces, huh?

That's a nice thing you did for the school and those girls.

BTW, I have the same posture problem. I have to concsiously remember to pull my shoulders back when I walk and stand. I blame it on my large boobs.

I too would love to see the pictures, but do respect the privacy issue. The main thing is that they had fun and made memories to last a lifetime.

Good job Miss Hula

Doing that for those girls far outweighs in importance a little bit of slouching.

That's also a pretty typical posture for a photographer, there is something about a camera that lends itself to cradling it like that, maybe it's the expense.

You're a good egg, Hula Girl. I'm sure the girls will love the photos.

My mom was the same way ... 'stand up straight!' And now I say the same thing to my girls. My older daughter is good about it but my younger one slouches all the time. I told them I will not rest until they stand up straight. After seeing that photo you'll be much more conscious of how you stand on a regular basis.

I'm so excited that you got to do this and continue to use your super-duper photo skills!

And if you find where to get a back brace, let me know as I'm there too, sister. : )
