Fun Monday Clothes You Can't Part With

*Update: Thanks to all who opened up their closets and played along today. It was most fun. We still need a host for next week, so let me know asap if you're interested.

Welcome to this week's Fun Monday. It's my first time hosting, so if I screw this up please let me know so I can fix it. My assignment for you this week was to show us those pieces of clothing you just can't part with, whether you wear them or not. It might be your grandma's vintage wedding dress, a jacket from high school, a t-shirt from an old boyfriend or those jeans you hope to get back into some day. It could be anything. Most of us have something like that we can't seem to throw away. Here are my items and below that are the links for everyone participating in Fun Monday. If I've left someone out, give me a shout. Check out everyone's website and enjoy.......and thanks for participating! If anyone wants to host next week, please let me know.

I have several items I can't seem to get rid of. There's the old flannel shirt of my mom's that I took to college and curled up in when I had the flu and had to nurse myself back to health without my mama for the first time. There are several concert t-shirts, the oldest of which is an REO Speedwagon shirt from 1982, and there is a pair of jeans from college that once every few years I manage to squeeze back into...and then out of. I have a cameo ring my great aunt gave me before she died, and a rhinestone snowflake pin of my mom's that's about forty years old.

Most of the special items in my closet are things that mark a special time in my life. Like this t-shirt from high school. It's from my junior year before we moved into a new consolidated high school and thought resurrecting the pep club would be a fun thing to do. It was. Then there's this shirt I got in college when our intramural volleyball team won the championship title in the 1984-85 season.

I think it's special because it's the only time I ever really felt athletic. I also have these from college. I'll pause until you quit giggling. These are the tights from my pom pon squad outfit. Our mascot was a horse, so we had horseshoes on our bottom that flashed to the audience when our skirts twirled. I know. I know. I'll pause for more giggling. And can I just say I was a little dismayed when I cropped this picture and realized that I took it at such an angle as to make these little drawers look really big. They look like granny panties in this photo. Ack! This t-shirt was from the late 80's when I played on the softball team for the radio stations at which I worked.
(I'll be glad when I figure out out to use the blur tool on Photoshop.) It's from a time when I felt decidedly nonathletic. My number was 00 and that pretty much states my softball abilities. I had a great time though. We played a lot of games for charity. And finally, this collection wouldn't be complete without showing you my wedding dress. It's sealed in a special box that I can't open, so a picture will have to do. Remember, this was 1990 so prepare yourself for some big hair and a really big dress.
I told you it was big. I loved this dress....all 29,016 ruffles. I felt like a princess walking down the aisle, although it was terribly heavy. It seems pretty frou frou compared to today's dresses. I can't imagine Teen Angel wanting to wear it when she gets married, but I'm keeping it around just in case big ruffles come back in style.
That's all of my stuff today, so head on over to all these great websites and see what's in their closets!

Love the wedding dress!

Thanks for hosting.

Jason, as himself said...

Yeah, the pom pom squad tights? They looked to me like granny-panties with horseshoes on them.

But, even though it was 1990, that dress was absolutely beautiful. Hey. That's the year I got married, too.

Your wedding dress is beautiful. I do not have mine anymore. I still have the husband after 40 plus years, but not the dress. That makes me a little sad. Thank you for hosting this week's Fun Monday. I am looking forward to everyone's can't-throw-away clothes.

Oh Hula Girl! I'll give it to you for bravery--you must be a very secure person to be willing to share your pom pom drawers. . .

Although you make no claims for athleticism, you certainly are to be congratulated for trying such a variety.

Oh my goodness you kept all these things ?? I don't keep anything, I just don't hang on clothes they have never been important to me.

I love the cover panties with the horse shoes! And your wedding dress is very pretty. But I know what you mean, everything is such clean lines now.

Great stuff! I especially like the pom pom shorts, with the horseshoe prints. That's cool.

The wedding dress is really something, I wouldn't wear one like that myself, but I can understand how you felt like a princess in it.

Happy Fun Monday, and thanks for hosting.

I loved your post. I've posted and I'm headed out the door. Great subject. Funny how most of us revert back to jr/sr/ high school for "favorite outfits". I am trying to track down a 1958 Seventeen magazine that had my favorite dress pictured in it. I got the dress for Easter that year and wore it until it had holes in it but I have no idea what happened to it. Probably find it when I clean out my Mom's house after she's gone.
Have a great day.

I love the wedding dress! Have always been a ruffles fan. How neat that you still have T-shirts from HS and college.

I am up and running.

My wedding dress is from 1994. We could be big haired puffy dress sisters. Instead of bushels of ruffles, I had lace and beads more numerous that grains of sand. My dress was also Mermaid style. The train was in a slightly different time zone-but also detachable so I had a whole different look at my reception.

Most importantly though, I felt pretty-I bet you did too. Ruffles, lace and beads always make a girl feel pretty.

My wedding dress had the EXACT same frills.

It weighed like 800 pounds.

This is such a wonderful topic. Thanks for hosting today. I had trouble choosing what to share … then ran into computer issues, but mine is up at last. Your vintage wedding dress is magnificent and you looked lovely it in. I loved all the items you've shared ... and am thinking about going through my t-shirt collection to add a few more things ... but maybe I'll leave well enough alone because I'd like to see what everyone else has shared. I hope you don't mind that I borrowed your Hula Girl Fun Monday logo ... just for today. I need to get busy and make an original of my own one of these days ... but perhaps not until my new computer arrives (and Wimbledon is over).
Hugs and blessings,

LOVE the dress! My wedding dress had this obnoxious GIGANTIC bow on the back...I LOVED IT!

We called the tights, lolly pops. Not sure that was such a good name for them. lol.

I bet a seamstress could chop off those ruffles and re purpose that dress.

Sayre said...

I think it's the horseshoes that make your pompom panties look so large...

That dress? To die for!

Hey! I just realized that I wasn't on your participant list! Could you add me? I guess I didn't think I'd be up for it after surgery last week, but I posted anyway...

HI Hula Girl,
I'm late in getting my post up. SO SORRY!! Anyway, I love the big hair and big dress with all the ruffles. Had I been married in the early ninety's I would have chosen the same thing. Come to think of it I was married in the ninety's.
I had the same sleeves!

Do we know who is hosting next week's Mon Funday?

Unknown said...

Ah, those were the days, when schools actively encouraged members of the audience to gaze at teenage girls' butts by emblazoning their outfits with horseshoes. Funny.

ChrisB said...

Just wanted to let you know that I managed to get onto my daughter's laptop so thought I would come by and see what you had lurking in your wardrobe. I did have a giggle at the horseshoes on your bottom!
